Beautiful Mosques

Samarkand, Uzbekistan - Bibi Khanym Mosque

This truly amazing Mosque was completed in 1404 having been commissioned by the Turco Mongol conqueror, Timur. Having scored a huge victory in his conquest of Delhi, the jubilant Timur left his legacy to the world with the construction of this Mosque. Built in the Azeri style it is an imposing building with huge gate-like structures and four minarets.

The complex fell into disrepair for several hundred years but was restored towards the end of the last century. Visitors today can truly appreciate the intricate artwork and detail.

Samarkand is truly off the beaten tourist track but the remoteness of Uzbekistan and the opportunity to see Bibi Khanym Mosque makes the journey worth it.
