Old Delhi - Jama Masjid

The Jama Masjid is at the center of Old Delhi or as the locals say "Purani Delhi". Completed in 1656 under the orders of the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, the Jama Masjid is as majestic today as it was when first built.

What Makes it Special?

Built from local red sandstone the courtyard and mosque can accommodate over 25,000 worshipers and despite the crowds, there is serene peace at prayer time.

Getting there

The best way to get to the Jama Masjid is to take the Delhi Metro to a station called Chawri Bazar. You will not only bypass sitting in Delhi traffic but as you emerge from the very well maintained modern subway you get the feeling that you have gone back in time to 1656! Your senses are hit by the smell of delicious street foods, you battle the streets with rickshaw pullers, goats and endless numbers of people emerging from shops that belong to another era. The journey to the Jama Masjid and it's environment make this a truly amazing experience.

Complete your visit with a meal at the world famous Karim's kebab house, just steps away from the Masjid, apparently, the cooks and owners are descendants of the very people who cooked for the emperor.

Have you visited Jama Masjid in Old Delhi? Did you have a similar experience?

P.S. Confessions time, on each visit, we headed to the Shangri-la on Janpath for a coffee and to gently bring us back to this century!
